What If AI Is Giving Us a Gift?
Everywhere I turn someone is talking about AI.
Will it replace jobs?
Will it replace artists?
Will it replace writers?
Will it replace teachers?
Maybe.
It will almost certainly replace many of the things we do. Repetitive tasks. Manual processes. Work that follows a predictable pattern.
But what if we're asking the wrong question?
Instead of wondering what AI will replace, perhaps we should ask:
What can never be replaced?
Not your job.
You.
For most of our lives we've been taught that our value comes from what we produce.
What do you do?
What title do you have?
How much do you earn?
We become so focused on doing that we forget about being.
Some people are fortunate enough to build careers they genuinely love. I was one of them.
As a speech-language pathologist, I certainly provided a service, but I also experienced tremendous joy. Every child, every family, every challenge was different. There were difficult days, of course, but even those carried meaning because I knew I was helping another human being.
That is something no algorithm can experience.
AI doesn't know joy.
It doesn't know grief.
It doesn't know what it feels like to sit beside a friend who's hurting, to laugh until your stomach aches, or to watch a sunrise after a difficult season and feel hope return.
It can describe those moments.
It cannot live them.
As I write this, another thought keeps surfacing.
Perhaps many of us have been programmed long before AI arrived.
Programmed to stay busy.
Programmed to chase productivity.
Programmed to believe our worth depends on accomplishing more.
Programmed to keep running on a hamster wheel even when we're exhausted.
If that's true, maybe AI isn't the biggest change happening.
Maybe it's giving us the opportunity to step off that wheel.
To ask questions we've been too busy to ask.
Who am I without my job title?
What brings me alive?
When do I feel most like myself?
What gifts do I naturally bring to other people?
Lately it's becoming harder to know what's real.
Photos are generated.
Videos are altered.
Articles are written by machines.
Sometimes I look at something online and immediately wonder, Was this even created by a person?
Ironically, the more artificial our world becomes, the more valuable authenticity becomes.
People are hungry for what is genuine.
A real conversation.
A handwritten note.
A heartfelt laugh.
Someone willing to listen without trying to sell something.
That can't be manufactured.
Just this weekend I was talking with someone about online influencers. Some seem larger than life until, a few years later, we discover the carefully crafted image wasn't quite real.
People feel disappointed.
Sometimes betrayed.
It leaves us wondering:
Who can I trust?
Perhaps the better question is:
Can I trust myself?
That begins by looking in the mirror—not to criticize yourself, but to rediscover yourself.
To remember who you were before life told you who you were supposed to be.
Nature reminds us of this every day.
A tree doesn't compare itself to another tree.
A flower doesn't apologize for blooming at a different time.
Nothing in nature is trying to become something else.
It simply grows into what it was created to be.
Maybe that's our invitation too.
Not to compete with AI.
Not to fear it.
But to become more fully ourselves.
To cultivate kindness.
Curiosity.
Compassion.
Presence.
Creativity.
Wisdom.
Love.
These are not algorithms.
They are deeply human qualities.
So perhaps AI isn't the end of something.
Perhaps it's the beginning of remembering what truly matters.
The quieter we become, the easier it is to hear that inner voice.
The one that has been there all along.
And maybe that's the greatest opportunity of all.
Not to become more efficient.
But to become more human.
Because no technology—no matter how remarkable—can replace a person who is fully alive.
